Memoir
Travel: If I call my 20+ year blog a "travelogue", it's because I have moved a lot in this life. I have lived in the United States, in Ethiopia, and in the Netherlands. And in between, I have taught or traveled in Eastern Europe, in the Middle East, and in South America.
Work: In the U.S., I taught in alternative high schools and community colleges. In Ethiopia, I managed educational NGOs (one of which I founded). In the Netherlands, I teach in a business management degree programme.
Passion: I studied history in university, so wherever I travel, I see history. I see art history. I see religion; I see philosophy. Because I love writing, I write about what I see, what I learn, what I read about, and what I think.
Careful So
A memoir of my first two years in Ethiopia
It’s a story of grief and hope. After someone dear to me has died suddenly, I undertake to make her dream real: a school for poor children in Ethiopia. When I land in Addis Ababa, I have no one but her grieving family and a few of her university friends. We must do something for the children. For me, it means a new path.
